Harley sat in the chair with his arms crossed, glaring at Nick. He’d been humiliated when Nick had led him out of the bar like a common criminal. He would make Tanner or Juliet pay for this if it was the last thing he did on this earth. Harley was convinced one of them was responsible for his current predicament.

He had said exactly four words to the Sheriff, “I want a lawyer.”

After he uttered those magic words, Nick allowed him to call his sister and arrange for legal representation. Harley knew his rights, and if they had more than supposition and the couple bags of drugs they’d found on him, they would have arrested him already.

Nick looked bored as he scrolled through his phone. Probably checking Facebook.

Time ticked slowly by, and without anything to occupy himself, Harley got increasingly agitated. Shifting in his seat, he finally blurted out, “Can I at least get something to read while we wait?”

The sheriff looked up from his phone. “It talks, amazing! Hmmm, care to say anything more about the drugs we found in your possession?”

“Fuck you,” Harley sneered.

Nick returned his attention to his phone, seemingly ignoring him.

Finally Harley heard the outside door open. Nick stood and exited the office. A few minutes later, he returned with Darla and an attractive man in an expensive suit.

Looks like he’s paid well. I sure hope he earns his fee by getting me out of this mess.

The man held out his hand. “Cole Harding. I presume you haven’t said anything yet.”

Harley nodded.

Cole turned his gaze on the sheriff. “I sure hope you have more than a couple of bags of drugs, because, son, after I’m through with you, you’re gonna wish you’d never embarrassed this fine officer of the law.”

“I’m not your son, and we just had a few simple questions to ask Harley. If he hasn’t done anything wrong, I’m not sure why he isn’t willing to clear things up for us,” Nick responded.

“Before you begin asking any questions, I’m sure you won’t mind if I confer with my client.” Cole grinned.

The sheriff nodded and left the office.

“Harley, would you like your sister present or not?” Cole asked.

“She can stay.”

“Got any ideas about how they knew you had those two baggies of drugs in your pocket?” Cole asked.

“I’d guess they got some kind of anonymous tip. The sheriff’s office is leading the investigation into a recent murder here, and the victim was dealing prescription drugs to some of the locals.”

“What’s your involvement in this?”

“We were friends—sort of.”

Cole raised his eyebrow. “Were you involved in this side business the guy had going?”

Harley nodded. He figured he should be honest with his lawyer, and Darla already knew about everything since she was up to her neck in this nasty business herself.

“Were you helping at all with the investigation?” Cole asked.

“Well, I did go to the murder scene when it was first called in,” Harley answered.
